Carlo Trevisan is an Italian surrealist painter whose luminous oil canvases — whales adrift in painted skies, floating botanicals, dreamlike icons of everyday life — have earned him gallery representation across three continents and a place in Saatchi Art's curated collections. Rooted in the Italian Renaissance tradition and animated by a distinctly contemporary wit, his work invites viewers into a world of serenity, irony, and wonder.
Born in Cesena, in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, Carlo Trevisan was educated in Sansepolcro — the Tuscan birthplace of Renaissance master Piero della Francesca — before continuing his studies at the University of Pisa. That early immersion in the geometry, light, and quiet order of the Italian Renaissance remains visible in every canvas: Trevisan's surrealism is built on classical foundations, with meticulously balanced compositions and a chromatic sensibility he describes as "lively and classic."
Trevisan devoted himself to painting in 1990, emerging from the vibrant Tuscan art scene as a member of the Artistic Movement of Versilia (MAV) and the Italian artists' association UCAI. From 1992 to 2001 he served as editor-in-chief of the art magazine Sinopia, a role that sharpened the critical and poetic voice that now runs through his visual work — Trevisan is a published poet as well as a painter.
Since 2001 he has exhibited with galleries around the world, and in 2007 he was invited to show with the Saatchi Gallery in London. His work has since been featured in the Saatchi Art Catalog and repeatedly selected for curated collections by Saatchi Art's Chief Curator, Rebecca Wilson. His paintings hang in galleries and private collections across the United States, Europe, China, Hong Kong, Qatar, Brazil, and Mexico, with permanent gallery presences in Philadelphia, Boston, Paris, Lyon, and beyond. Among his most ambitious undertakings was a 2017 commission for The Study Hotel in Philadelphia: 214 original oil paintings, each one unique, completed in just two months. In 2023, he opened his own space, Trevisan Art Gallery, in Verona, the city he calls home.
