Danny Keith - Herring Cove: A Love Story
Herring Cove: A Love Story is Danny Keith's most intimate series to date — a sustained meditation on summer, desire, and the romanticized memory of place. Set almost entirely on and around Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown, the paintings celebrate the fleeting, sensory quality of a summer afternoon: the smell of Coppertone lotion and sea salt, sun-warmed skin against pink sand, quiet moments of repose in the dunes.
Men at rest, men together, men alone with the sky. Working in oil on panel in sizes ranging from 16x20 to 30x40 inches, Keith has adopted a softer, more nostalgic palette than in previous series — deliberately edited and romanticized, the canvases echo how memory revises experience rather than faithfully recording it. The paintings do not document Herring Cove so much as they reconstruct it through desire and longing.
The exhibition extends beyond the paintings themselves. A series of objets d'art — rhinestone- encrusted paperbacks including Jaws, Land's End, and Call Me By Your Name, interspersed between works as float-mounted wall pieces — bring a second layer of dimensionality and wit to the show. These objects of summer reading, preserved in crystal, amplify the show's central theme: that memory assigns significance to the ordinary, making the random feel profound. Customized bottles of actual Herring Cove sand and message-in-a-bottle editions — bearing the handwritten line "I fell in love with you that summer day we went to Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown" — complete the installation. For the opening night, Keith has arranged to scent the gallery with Coppertone Sun Tan Lotion — coconut and sea salt — in a direct sensory invocation of the world the paintings inhabit.
Danny Keith is an award-winning figurative painter who holds an MFA from the California College of the Arts with a focus on figurative painting. He has completed three residencies at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, one of the country's most prestigious artist residency programs. His paintings, celebrated for their emotionally charged palettes and masterfully unfinished brushwork, are held in private collections throughout the United States. He is exclusively represented by Greg Salvatori Gallery.
