PARTIES - CELEBRATING THE MOMENT
Archetypes, stereotypes, and Renaissance evocations blend playfully into bright, bold, colorful images. Greg Salvatori tableaux are full of irony, sexiness and joyful celebration of the moment.
Composed of imagined party tableaux, the “Parties” series has been an ongoing exploration for Salvatori, drawing on his unique photographic approach that uses high speed photography to freeze action in mid-air.
Whether a tea party, shipwreck, sex party, or séance, each scene captures a powerfully dynamic stillness, prompting a sense of wonder and curiosity. Drawing on Salvatori’s signature pink palette, these works are filled with color and details that provoke our imagination and joy.
"I have fun creating the ‘Parties,’ and I involve friends and strangers alike,” Salvatori said, “I love to sketch something on paper when I first get the idea in my mind. Then I work to enrich the scene with details and items that bring more meaning to the story. Every little detail counts for me.”
The works recall not only the tradition of still life paintings in Western art, but also—in their richness of color and texture, and their use of contemporary elements—remind us of a technicolor film still, where action is frozen for a split second, suspended in time, allowing our imagination to wander. Each scene prompts us to conjure a story that brought these people together, and to consider the lives behind the gestures and movements. In their large format, each work in the series asks us to consider our own place in the party, getting lost in the scene with our own imagination.
