Richard Taddei: Muscle Memories
On Friday, June 19th, Greg Salvatori Gallery opens Muscle Memories, the annual solo exhibition of new works by Richard Taddei. The opening reception begins at 7:00 PM at 366 Commercial Street, Provincetown. The exhibition runs through July 2nd. Admission is free.
Taddei turns 80 this year. He has been painting for five decades. Muscle Memories is both a celebration and a continuation — proof that the hand still knows exactly what it is doing, and that the vision behind it has only deepened.
The Body as Memory's Most Faithful Keeper
Richard Taddei was born in New York City in 1946 and trained at the University of Toledo and Pratt Institute before finding his true education in the orbit of Edward Melcarth — a painter who would connect him to a lineage stretching back through European figuration and forward into the queer artistic underground of mid-century Manhattan. Through Melcarth, Taddei moved through a world that included Peggy Guggenheim, Keith Haring, and John Loring. He received major commissions from Tavern on the Green and Tiffany & Co. He built a body of work that is instantly, unmistakably his own.
What makes Taddei's paintings so singular is the tension they hold without resolving it. He works in a style that layers trompe l'oeil illusion with distorted perspective and luminous, charged figuration — images that seem to exist just at the edge of the physical world, bodies that feel both present and remembered, desire rendered not as confession but as visual fact. The figures in his paintings carry time in their muscles: postures accumulated over decades, the language of the body as it has been observed, loved, and painted again and again.
Muscle Memories takes its title from exactly that quality. At 80, Taddei's hand carries fifty years of painting in it. The work that results is not a retrospective — it is new, forward-moving, and alive. But it is also inseparable from everything that came before it. The body remembers. So does the painter.
“My latest visual obsession seems to be the effort to connect with another person or depicting longing for another” says Taddei “and being thwarted or separated or unrequited for your desires. It is the sad history of lovers.”
The Centerpiece: Reunited Lovers
The exhibition is anchored by Reunited Lovers, a new oil painting that distills everything Taddei does at his most powerful: two figures, charged proximity, the sense of a moment held just long enough to become permanent. The painting carries the emotional directness that has defined his work across five decades — queer desire rendered with neither apology nor theatricality, simply the fact of two bodies finding their way back to each other.
Surrounding it, a body of new oils that demonstrate the full range of Taddei's singular vision. His palette — warm, luminous, always slightly heightened — gives his figures an interior light that no photograph could replicate. His compositions compress space in ways that feel both classical and completely personal. His subjects are, as they have always been, men: observed with love, painted with honesty, and given the dignity of being seen.

Trained at the University of Toledo and Pratt Institute and mentored by Edward Melcarth, Taddei developed a singular style combining trompe l'oeil technique with distorted perspective and luminous queer figuration. His commissions include works for Tavern on the Green and Tiffany & Co. He is represented exclusively by Greg Salvatori Gallery, where he has presented an annual solo exhibition of new works each summer season.
